Jellyfish
By Amy Harder
One of my favorite writers is Phil Vischer, founder of Big Idea Productions and VeggieTales. From my first encounter with VT in ‘94, I was hooked when he actually rhymed the word, Babylon. (Watch Episode #1, Where’s God When I’m S-Scared? to find out the rhyme.) I’ve been a fan of Phil’s work over the years–singing along to the videos, watching on the big screen, and reading his kids’ books–but recently I’ve been having more fun seeing him get back to his puppetry roots on JellyfishLand.com.
Not many folks are aware that VeggieTales former Top Tomato is also a skilled puppeteer. As a matter of fact, Phil met his friend (and VT cohort), Mike Nawrocki, on the puppet team at college. (That explains a lot, doesn’t it?)
So, now he’s founded this new creative shop and we get to enjoy some fun, Muppet-like silliness with puppet newscasts that cover everything from movies and current events to shameless self-promotion. All the past newscasts are available in the archives, so check ‘em out. What’s your favorite? …Boo Boo the Chicken? …the love song to Susie? …the Sunday School Lady? Oh, and speaking of shameless self-promotion, go back to see my little “Crazy Pig-tail Girl” in her Internet video debut. Ain’t she cute?
So what’s next for The Jelly News? New characters? More frequent updates? (We can always hope.) I’m certain that we’ll be hearing more about Phil’s soon-to-be-released books and maybe some insider info on the upcoming Pirates movie. Whatever it is, I know it will amuse and appease the strange and growing contingent of Buck Denver fans worldwide. Nice job, Mr. Vischer. Keep ‘em coming.
